An excursion to Sopron – the city which bridges Austria and Hungary

Sopron impresses with its cultural diversity

Did you know that Sopron (also known as Oedenburg) was formerly the old state capital of the Burgenland (western Hungary)? Sopron is one of many cultural sites which reflect the glamour of the Habsburg era.

You should set aside an entire day for your trip to Sopron. Located to the south-west of Lake Neusiedl, the city of Sopron forms a bridge between Austria and Hungary. Sopron is just a 15 minute drive away.

A trip to Sopron in Hungary is a real experience. Numerous sights, theatre and music festivals impress visitors from all over the world each year. Sopron’s cultural life is also heavily influenced by the great composers Joseph Haydn and Franz Liszt.

Sights not to be missed during a trip to Sopron:

  • The firewatch tower with its gate of faith is the landmark of the city of Sopron
  • The Stornó House with its important collection of art
  • The Baroque style Trinity pillar
  • The Goat Church: regal dedications once took place here
  • The Ursuline Church in a neo Gothic style

You will soon see that a trip to Sopron is well worthwhile. Keep your eyes wide open as you stroll through this university town in Hungary and you will see plenty of testaments to history on street corners:  the Romans once founded the settlement of Scarabantia here which served as an important trading point on the Amber Road. The mediaeval city walls of Sopron stand on the site of the former earth walls of the settlement.

The Burgenland has other historically interesting destinations as well: like old town of Rust or Eisenstadt with its magnificent Esterházy Palace.
