Passion Plays in the Burgenland

A mystical religious and cultural event

The local population has pledged to stage the Passion Plays in the Burgenland every five years against the impressive backdrop of the historic Roman quarry in St. Margarethen.

The Passion Plays in the Burgenland were staged for the first time in 1926 at a farm. In 1961, these pious plays surrounding the suffering and death of Jesus Christ were moved to their natural stage in the historic Roman quarry in St. Margarethen.

Authentic Passion Plays in the Burgenland

The Passion Plays in the Burgenland are not an ‘event’ as such; they are the result of a need to understand the last days of Jesus Christ depicted on stage. The Oriental-like backdrop of the Roman quarry in St. Margarethen lends the plays an authentic feel. The performers are all amateur actors from all different age groups and professions. The proceeds from the Passion Plays in the Burgenland are donated to charities of the actors’ choice.
