The hilly vineyards of Lake Neusiedl

An exceptional winegrowing area in the Burgenland

The hilly terrain of the Lake Neusiedl winegrowing area offers the ideal conditions for producing the best wines in the Burgenland. Three different winegrowing areas from North to South guarantee some fantastic wine tasting sessions and enjoyable evenings in Moerbisch.

The gently rolling Leitha peaks, the hilly landscapes of Rust and Lake Neusiedl all have a positive impact on the winegrowing areas of the Burgenland. The hilly landscapes of Lake Neusiedl are home to a long-standing winegrowing tradition. Some exceptional wines are produced along the Leitha Mountains based on the Pinot Blanc, Chardonnay, Welschriesling and Blaufraenkisch grape varieties.

Three winegrowing areas in the hilly landscapes of Lake Neusiedl

These three different winegrowing areas form the basis for the broad diversity of wines produced on the hilly terrain of Lake Neusiedl. The grapes grown on the southern slopes of the Leitha Mountains mature to create full-bodied wines with a fine mineral structure. In Zagersdorf and Poettelsdorf, the climate and soil are similar to the winegrowing conditions in the neighbouring Central Burgenland region. In the vineyards close to Lake Neusiedl such as in Oggau, Rust and Moerbisch, the grapes mature particularly well thanks to the pleasant temperatures and sunlight reflected by the lake. During the night, Lake Neusiedl releases the heat it has stored during the day, creating an exceptional winegrowing climate from April to October in particular. The warmth and humidity of autumn form the basis for the noble rot Botrytis cinerea and the renowned Ruster Ausbruch, one of the most delicious and exquisite sweet wines.

The historic free town of Rust is located just a few kilometres from your holiday home 'Das Schmidt' and is a stronghold of top quality Austrian wines. The most famous wine to come from Rust is the Ruster Ausbruch, a world class sweet wine which is widely recognised internationally. Interestingly, the citizens of Rust purchased the town charter of Rust from the Habsburgs in the 17th century. They paid with 500 buckets of Ruster Ausbruch.
