If you fancy exploring the castles of the Burgenland, the only problem is deciding where to start! The team at the 4-star independent hotel 'Das Schmidt' have selected four castles in the Burgenland which offer a good overview of the diversity of the fortifications and opulent residences present around Lake Neusiedl.

Halbturn Castle

Halbturn Castle is one of the most significant Baroque buildings in the Burgenland region. This former imperial hunting and summer residence was built in 1711 based on the designs of the famous Baroque architect Lucas von Hildebrandt. The extensive castle park, castle cellars, art and culture events and exhibitions make Halbturn Castle a real magnet for visitors.

Esterházy Castle in Eisenstadt

If you are visiting castles in the Burgenland, make sure you don’t miss the Baroque Esterházy Castle in Burgenland’s capital. The Baroque castle was built from 1663-1672 and is the attractive setting for the annual Haydn Festival.

Esterházy Castle in Fertöd (Hungary)

This castle is known as the ‘big castle’ of the Esterházy family.

Bernstein Castle: examples of fortresses in the Burgenland

Bernstein Castle was built in 1199 and achieved fame thanks to a film: Bernstein was once the home of Ladislaus Almásy, the historical role model for the Count character featured in the English film drama ‘The English Patient’.

Lockenhaus Castle: the 'knight’s castle' in the Burgenland

Lockenhaus Castle has been dated back to 1200 and is Austria’s last ‘authentic knight’s castle’. Romanesque and Gothic elements create the setting for this knightly mediaeval existence. Lockenhaus Castle is located at the heart of the Geschriebenstein nature park and is the location of the annual 'Lockenhaus Chamber Music Festival'.
